The following story has been added to the website by 大象传媒 Radio Cornwall CSV Action Producer Nina Davey with the permission of the author Jack Prior. The author understands the sites terms and conditions.
I was a schoolboy during the war. I walked 2 miles to the station to catch a train for an 8 mile journey, then another 3 mile walk to Drax Grammar School in Yorkshire. During the first walk in Selby I passed a closed down fruit shop which still had an old advertising sticker in the window. It was for FYFFES BANANAS with these bunches of YELLOW THINGS hanging down - I had never seen a banana and although 10-12 years old it was a mystery to me but passing it twice daily it became sub consciously imprinted on my mind. After the war I went home as usual and Mum had been shopping - she had placed a bunch of these YELLOW THINGS on the table. I took one look and said "Ooh look FYFEES" (my way of pronouncing it.) Granny, Grandad, mother, and aunt were all there (my Dad had been killed in North Africa in 1941.) They all dissolved into fits of laughter. Most embarassing for a 12 year old - How was I supposed to know they were BANANAS?
