For several years my sister and I spent one night each week working in a W.V.S canteen in downtown Birkenhead. It was open all night and most of the men coming in were young sailors off the Russian and Atlantic convoys. They were mostly dead tired and fell asleep over their food, but were always appreciative of our efforts. The helpers were given a room with bunk beds where we were supposed to snatch a few hours sleep. Unfortunately, the town hall was just a stone鈥檚 throw away, and the big clock chimed every quarter of an hour, so sleep was difficult, and many a time did I fall asleep over my desk the next day.
