I lived in Ipswich during the war and I remember one time, when I was walking around the docks after work near the river. Suddenly the sirens started, I remember all the birds flying away in fright. I was with my friend at the time walking back from work, we didn't run, because we knew there was nothing we could do because we were too far away from cover. But the strange thing was, my boss drove past in a rush and he must have known it was us, but he didn't give us a lift. But it was such an experience.
I also remember another air raid, I was living with my sister, and my brother had left to go in the army. When the sirens went off, we evacuated the house to go to the bunker in the garden. In the bunker we had bunk beds, and everything ready. We had to be prepared because we didn't know how long we would have to stay down there. Once the raid had ended we would have an air raid warden come and tell us it was over.
During the war I remember having rations. I lived in a small house with a large family, and we were only allowed a particular amount of food, but we made do.
