One day while we were at my school, Coombe Road School, we suddenly heard the sound of aircraft during the morning playtime. Looking up, we saw a German aircraft coming straight towards us. It was flying quite low, and following behind it was an RAF Spitfire. Suddenly there was machine-gun fire. All the children were screaming, and most of them fell down. Myself and one or two others stood frozen flat against the wall of the school hall, right in the line of fire. Suddenly there was an almighty cracking sound as the bullets smashed the slates of the hall roof. We were covered in slate fragments and dust, but luckily no one was hurt - just very scared.
