As Jack was a dockyard worker, he was not called up for military service,(he did, however join the Special Constables as he wanted to do more than his ordinary job.)I remember him telling me how, when the call for little ships went out, he spent all day lifting out small boats from a store and putting them into a dock, using the crane on which he sometimes worked. If the boats sank they were just left, if they floated they were tied, in groups,to motor boats and sent down the Medway and across to France.
He also told me about seeing the Medway Queen, a paddle steamer that did trips to Sheerness in the summer, setting off to join in the rescue attempt.
He had many stories about things that happened, some of whish I have told children in my classes over the years.
