I can remember hearing sirens when Bristol was being bombed and the whole family crowding into the pantry and sitting under the marble slab, ( very safe). It's where Grandma kept her pickle in large stoneware jars. I ate them like sweets.
I can also remember walking along the street with my Mum and hearing a low flying plane ( it did hit the railway station), my mum threw me on a wall and lay on top of me until it was all over.

Message 1 - Sheila's Childhood memories of War

Posted on: 02 June 2004 by Audrey Lewis - WW2 Site Helper

Dear Sheila,
You may like to read the story of Ian on my personal page, 'Bombings over Bristol'. It may give you some idea of the seriousness of those days when your mother shielded you from the bombs. What a lovely mother!
Nice to read your story.
Regards,
Audrey Lewis
