My name is Alice Finley and I worked in Doxford's shipyards in Sunderland. I was there for the entire duration of the war.
I was a Burner and the men marked off plates and I would burn them along with various other bars.
I burned them by attaching oxygen bottles to the burner, and I used to get them across by kicking the bottles across the yards.
Heheh, the men used to call me "little burner".
I got a lot of help from the other men, and I enjoyed every minute I worked there.

Message 1 - Looking for old friends

Posted on: 04 July 2005 by Liz_goldsmith

My name is Betty Goldsmith, it was Betty Hunter before I married Billy Goldsmith in 1944.
I worked in the riveting store at Doxford during the war as a Catcher. We used to go in the little holes in the ships to pass the rivets out to the 'holder-upper' and then to the riveter. My husband Billy was a riveter.
Some of the names I remember are Lily Hacket and Tosh.
If anyone out there remembers me or Billy I would love to hear from you on the site.
