During the Second World War Nottingham鈥檚 annual Goose Fair took place during the summer instead of October because of the early blackouts in the autumnal months. I remember when I nine years old, one of the American soldiers based in Nottingham paid for me to go on one of the fairground rides. The Americans were always friendly. They used to have more funds than we did and we used to ask, 鈥淕ot any gum, chum?鈥 I didn鈥檛 mind that they were popular with the British women. That same US soldier left Nottingham for Normandy on D-Day in 1944.
