In 1938(?) the government issued gas masks to the members of the public. However, gas masks were not to be issued to babies.
I was a babe in arms at the time and my mother refused to accept a gas mask unless and until they were issued to babies as well, commenting to the effect that: "If the baby is gassed what's the point in me having a gas mask?" After much debate and confusion it was decided that babies could be fitted with gas masks.
This was done and I became, unwittingly, the first baby to be issued with a gas mask. The story appeared in the local paper - Accrington Observer (I think) together with a photograph of my mother and myself.
Until a few years ago I had a copy of the newspaper story and photo. Regrettably I have now lost the cutting and have not, as yet, been able to find another. Research continues!
