My three brothers and my father all served during World War 2.
My father, Alex Sr, and brother Robert were both in the Navy. While my other two brothers, Alex and John, served in the Army.
When my eldest brother Alex left for war my grandmother gave him her wedding ring as a good luck token. He served out in Japan, and was captured by the enemy who put him in a POW camp. He stayed there for three years. The ring was so tight on my brothers hand that when his captors tries to remove it they had to break his fingers to get it off.
One of my other brothers, Robert, was stationed out in America for most of the war. He always said that he didn't see much of what happened from where he was. One thing he always tried to do was send supplies back home to our mother. There was always a great deal of excitement when we got a package from America, becuase it could contain luxuries we couldn't find at home.
One time he sent a big container of flour back home. But the only thing he could find to transport it back in was an old soap box. When my mother opened it we couldn't use it, because all we could tase was the soap powder.
We were a very lucky family as all three brothers, and my father, survived the war.
