I was 6 years old when the war started and my memories are about my mothers cooking.
For a treat we would sometimes have a paraffin sponge cake. My mother would split the cake and spread it with jam. She would wait a while then scrape the jam off for use elsewhere. This was her recipe:
5 tbsp self-raising flour
3 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp liquid paraffin
2 tbsp dried egg
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp lemon essence
a little milk to mix
Mix together flour, sugar, dried egg and baking powder. Add liquid paraffin and milk mix to a dropping consistency. Bake in a hot oven for 20 mins or a little over.
