My aunt Rosalind Tyrrell (nee Parkes), born 1915 in Finchley, was an administrator at the Royal Aeronautical Society at the outbreak of WW2. Her knowledge landed her a wartime job at the Air Ministry located in the War Office building. One night of heavy bombing she was preparing to leave her shift for home, when she literally bumped into 'Bomber' Harris in the underground corridor. He quietly said to her " Its pretty bad out there tonight. If I were you I'd spend the night here" She did, sleeping on a small cot somewhere in the labyrinth beneath Whitehall and has always remembered the kind and thoughful man who perhaps had saved her life that night.
