My dad volunteered in 1940 and joined the Navy. He did training in Plymouth and was then posted to the MHS Neptune and sailed to Cape Town.

He was then called to patrol the Meditterean to stop Rommel receiving shipments of tanks and ammunition in North Africa.

They were 15 miles off the coast of Tripoli when they struck Italian mines in 1941.

This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Anastasia Travers a volunteer with WM CSV Actiondesk on behalf of Geoff Staley and has been added to the site with his permission. Geoff Staley fully understands the sites terms and conditions.
