The Way We Met
In 1939 when war was declared, I was 15 years old. We had a lot of nightly air raids to face and sleepless nights in the shelters, but we suffered it all and will never forget it. Everyday at work, workmates were killed or injured. There was so much tragedy, my own loss being my sister-in-law and her family of nine killed after the all clear sounded. On June 4th 1941 I met my husband Ken through my friend Betty. He was billeted at her mother鈥檚 house from the army. We married on April 17th 1943. We borrowed dresses, tables and cutlery. Neighbours brought what they could from the rations for a meal. My aunt made a cake, the top made of sponge, the other tears made of cardboard covered with white ceiling wallpaper, it looked good though! We went on to have 5 girls and 46 years of happy married life. When my husband died I recall happy friendly times and sad one鈥檚 too in the war years, everyone was on hand to help each other. I am now 80 and think that I am lucky to have had a life in the forces, as they didn鈥檛 get a chance to have a life. We should never forget them.
