During heavy shelling from the Germans near Montecassino, my father, Michael Anthony McKendrick, fell into a cellar with three others.

It was full of wine!

They stayed there for a week and drank the lot. When they surfaced the front line had moved ten miles. They claimed they were trapped and were, as they put it, 鈥楧isappointed that no one had heard them shouting, 鈥淗elp!鈥濃

Message 1 - coincidence...

Posted on: 27 May 2004 by Researcher 235932

I met an Italian some years ago who told me his adventures during the war. After the 8th of September he was with a group of English engineers and ended up at Monte Cassino, and he told me of when they found a full cellar and they all stayed into it and drank all there was. Was there an Italian with your father by any chance? Or where there many full cellars near Monte Cassino?
