Brenda, aged 16.

I remember the day in 1943 when I was 12 years of age and the Sandhurst Road Junior school was bombed and the children in the playground were machine gunned.

I was ill and home for the day and the air raid siren had sounded when my mother and I heard the planes, and while we were standing at the back door we saw two planes flying so low that we could see the pilot in the cockpit.

We cheered and waved thinking that they were English planes. Suddenly they started firing machine guns and we realized that they were German planes. At this we ran indoors and took shelter.

When the all clear sounded we looked outside and saw smoke coming from the direction of the school and we learned that the children had been machined gunned in the play ground and that a bomb had hit the school.

If I had not been at home that day then I would have been in the playground with my friends.
