One evening my father said that there were unexploded bombs in Summerfield Park. but made no other comment. The next day myself and my friend Frankie, both of us age 6, went to the City Road entrance to the park.
Here there was a drive about 30-40 yards long from the road to the park gate. Sure enough, at the gate a barrier was in place and an elderly man, some sort of warden, was standing there so that we knew that we couldn't go into the park on that day. As we turned to go home we noticed that at the junction of the drive and City Road a small bomb was sticking out of the tarmac for about half of its length. It had obviously not been spotted by anyone in authority.
This was too good to be missed, so Frankie and myself began pulling hard to extract it. After a few minutes of no results the warden woke up to the situation. From a safe distance he began to shout and wave his arms. "Clear off you two!"etc.,etc. But he was 30 yards away so no problem and we carried on pulling.
"Oh look out, the man's coming." The warden had begun to walk very slowly towards us, still waving and shouting. Angry adults were far more frightening than a German bomb, so we ran home as fast as possible. empty handed.
I still remember those summer days and my lost prize.
