My bother was in the Royal Artillery during the war.

At one time his regiment were ordered to go to Germany by river in small boats undercover of darkness, and land on the riverbank.

But first he had to pass a medical. On that day he had a discharge from his ear, as a baby he had had meningitis and a discharge had saved his life.

The Medical Officer wouldn鈥檛 pass him for this mission, and the others departed.

But the Germans had found out about their plan, and as our boys came round a bend in the river, they were ambushed and everyone was killed.

So, my brother鈥檚 ear saved his life twice.
