I wrote a lot of letters home and my Mum kept them all.
This is a letter written from Shillong, Assam where the battalion re-fitted and trained before flying into north Burma:
‘Up in the hills of Assam was quite different from the burning plains of India. It seemed like heaven to us at the time. Unfortunately the rains came, down everywhere, and you could almost wring the atmosphere like a sock, but the country was lush and green and pleasant.
As you’ll see from above we have a new address. The reason why there is a longer gap since my letter is that we have been travelling since it was written with no opportunity of getting a letter away. However, I hope you have not been too anxious, and I can assure you I am still fit and in good health.’
That was written on the 29th May 1944. That was before we went into Burma.
