My grandfather, Frank, was an engine-driver during WW2, working on the railyards around the Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead. One night he and his pals were leaving the yard to share a pint at the local pub when the air-raid siren went. His two friends dashed for the safety of the pub (which they knew had a cellar), but grandad dove under the nearest railway truck. His friends saw this and screamed at him to get inside the pub, but grandad refused to budge. It was only after the all-clear, when his pals came out again that grandad had pointed out to him the contents of the goods wagon he had sheltered under: military explosives!!
