This story was submitted to the People’s War site by Geoffrey Redman from Crawley Library and has been added to the website on behalf of Mr R. Barber with his permission and he fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

In August 1940, I was doing shopping for my Mum in the morning. I saw a low flying Dornier 17 (distinctive wing shape) German Bomber on its bombing run to Biggin Hill aerodrome which was about ¼ mile away. I could see the crew clearly — it really was that low. The gunner opened fire on me and bullets went flying through the trees. There was no one else around except from a friend of my Mum’s who pushed me to cover and shielded me from the attack. Fortunately, none of us got hit.
