In August 1940, I was doing shopping for my Mum in the morning. I saw a low flying Dornier 17 (distinctive wing shape) German Bomber on its bombing run to Biggin Hill aerodrome which was about ¼ mile away. I could see the crew clearly — it really was that low. The gunner opened fire on me and bullets went flying through the trees. There was no one else around except from a friend of my Mum’s who pushed me to cover and shielded me from the attack. Fortunately, none of us got hit.
