This story was submitted to the People's War site by Laura Caldwell and has been added to the site with her grandmother's permission.
My Gran lived in a town called Renfrew. Air raid shelters were dug in back gardens and some in streets. These shelters were dug under ground. They were for people to go into when the bombs came. The sirens would sound again for the people to leave their homes and go into the shelters. They were also known as bunkers.
These bunkers where dug deep into the ground and covered with tin shutters. My Gran had to stay there until ther sirens sounded again for the all clear. She also had to put blackouts on the windows so that the planes above, couldn't see where to drop the bombs. My Gran had to carry a gas mask with her at all times to protect her from poisonous gases.
It was a black rubber mask which was quite heavy with a nozzle at the mouth where you could breath. She also had a ration book which allowed her to get some food. She was only allowed one small loaf of bread, one egg, one small bag of sugar and a small portion of butter. The book was stamped. This meant that she couldn't have anymore in that week.
This had to happen as the food was short and those times were very hard.
