it waz a rainy nite and time for me to do fire watch duty, the raid on the eastend waz in full swing the air waz thick with smoke bombs droppin all around ,dot myself and glad wore on top of our local department store when all of a sudden dot shouted hit the deck this one is gonna be close, the bomb hit the shop next door the sky lit up like a box of firecrackers, i waz shakin when i remembered i wouldnt be at work the next day i started to larf ,dot then asked why an i said that" bloody bomb ad hit where i waz goin to start work' we then all started to larf we wore also scared stiff, that nite when the raids ad stopped an we came down from firewatch we clang to each other for a bit ad a stiff shot of whiskey each and saw each other home, we new we wore on firewatch the next day to so we dicided to live that day to the fullist coz you never no when your nbr mite be up, dot glad an i wore the bestest of mates from that day on we still keep in touch even today ,i waz 17 dot waz 18 and glad 22, even tho times wore bad they wore the best but in 1943 my mother ad herd that er family waz in hidin,our family is jewish she dicided to go and try to help them she traveled to poland in an attemp to get them back safe to england, but due to a mix up with papers she and er family got caught they wore taken to auschwitz, were she waz given a tattoo with a nbr, er hair shaven ,and made to do demeanin work ,she waz separated from er family she only saw them when the camp dr did his visits to see if you wore still able to work, if not you wore sent to the chambers my mother prayed every nite that she would be not selected even tho the work she ad to do made er sick ,bein jewish made it worse but she ad er faith and always new god will be there lookin arfter er, and we back at home also believed she would return safely we ad to or we couldnt of carried on with what we also ad to do, at times we would find it ard and i would find myself cryin, my brothers wore away fightin one brother waz in the merchant marines the other in the navy ,so i did my part in the land army my brothers wore out at sea while i waz on land, but each time a telegram came we would freeze opin it waznt for us, and with my mother bein in auschwitz i ad alot to contend with, but at lest i can say i waz one of the lucky ones all my family came home even my mother, tho she waz scared and always hid er tattoo, she waz glad to be home, even tho er family whom she tried to save died in auschwitz, we never spoke of it or what appened, and we never asked, our family waz back together and that waz all that mattered, my brothers returned home to find their mother waz home safe and sound, we wore all greatfull the war ad ended, all that waz left to do waz to pick up the pieces, and rebuild our lives which we new would be ard not just for us but for everyone, there wore street partys, singin and dancin, kissin and cuddlin, with tears of joy and sadness, i can remember churchills speakin on the wireless and finkin to myself i hope that this never appens again, all those people who ave lost luv ones ere and in other countrys,the lives lost in camps is so unfare i asked god why in many a pray, now tho people need to remember and never to forget those who lost their lives to make this a betta place for every generation.
