I was 8 years old when a bomb went through the roof top of a neighbour, Milton Harrison. It set fire to his carpet and he put out the fire with his bare feet ending up with two club feet. The bomb blew out all our windows and because of that we were evacuated to Winlaton until our house was repaired.
I was evacuated to Winlaton from Winlaton Mill with my mother and my younger sister. One night the sirens went and we had to make our way to the air raid shelter. My mother was a cripple so our progress down the stairs was slow and we wondered if we were going to get there in time as we could hear the enemy aircraft getting closer. On the way down we heard a voice say "Keep calm, Ada". There was no one else in the house but my mother, my young sister and myself and both my mother and I distinctly heard the voice. "Who was that" I asked my mother. "That" she said, "was the voice of my mother, your grandmother". She had died many years previously
