In the Manchester blitz, my future husband and I got stuck in the Odeon cinema during an air raid. After midnight we decided to try to get home and set off across the city. Deansgate being blocked, we went to Corporation St, where the three CWS buildings were completely ablaze.
As we tried to get through, the water stopped, so the fire brigade were stumped. I shouted 鈥淲hat on earth have you stopped for 鈥 get on with it!!鈥
They let us through. Looking back, the city was one complete orange glow.
When we eventually got home it was four in the morning and my mother was worried sick!
