On August 15th 1940, I was cycling from Hordon to West Hartlepool. When I got to Blackhall the police were stopping all the traffic going south. As I worked at Blackhall pit, I went down to the air raid shelter and after a while one of the men said "let's have a walk along the pit heap and onto the beack Banks".
We got there to see a German bomber chased by two fighter, out to sea about 8 miles from the beach. One of the fighters was attacking the bomber, while the other one was just circling above. The bomber had two or three goes to crash in the sea, which it finally did about 8 or more miles out from where we were standing , between Easington and Blackhall.
The fighters then did a Victory Roll and from the Tees Bay area a boat was steaming fast to the spot where the bomber had gone in.
Footnote. An entry in the War Supplements to the Annual Reports of the Royal National Lifeboat Insititution records on the day concerned; SEAHAM. A German bomber had been shot down off Seaham, but it disappeared into the sea and nothing could be found. Rewards 拢4 19s 6d.
