SEPTEMBER 3RD, 1939
That dreadful day, when war was declared,
My heart missed a beat, and feared the worst,
The sound of the sirens,
Brought fear to us all,
My first thoughts were,
To run away from it all.
The sirens would scream,
The planes roared overhead,
When I should really have been,
Tucked up in my bed.
Thinking all kinds of horrors,
Wondering what I would find tomorrow,
Mostly it would be dust and rubble,
Left behind by the night roars from above.
We got accustomed to the sound,
But feared the devastation,
That happened on the ground.
Alas! It is now over,
We can sleep in our beds,
But the hours and friends we lost,
Will never be replaced.
