I was 10 years old when War was declared, 3rd September 1939, men dug treches in a field at the top of our road women were providing them with plenty of drinks. I remember the night Coventry was bombed, the German planes went over our house, we could see the glow of the fire after. The next morning they bought some of the Coventry people to shelter in our local village hall and asked for blankets and clothing.
We went into the pantry under the stairs when air raids sirens went, one night we heard a whistle and a loud thud, someone tapped the window and told us to stay there as a bomb had dropped in our front garden that hadn't exploded. We were evacuated to Sutton Coldfield and stayed with our relatives for six days, while we were there the sirens went at night and we had to go to shelter under The Empress cinema.
In 1942 I gave a concert in our front room with three friends (we sang and danced) raised 拢2.2.0 which I sent to Mrs Churchill's Red Cross appeal for aid to Russia, she sent me a letter of thanks, which said :
April 1942
Dear Beryl, Thelma, Jean and Dorothy
Thank you very much for your gift which i have just recieved. I am most grateful to you for the trouble you have taken to help the brave russians in their terrible struggle in the glorious defence of their country.
Your Sincere friend
Clementine Churchill
Which enclosed a reciept for the money sent.
When I was 14 years old I left school and went to work in a factory in Tamworth making wounded soldiers uniforms, they were Royal Blue which were very bright to show that they were wounded soldiers.
