The sirens went. Mother went to the air raid shelter with her Insurance Policy tucked under her arm, just as she always did. My sailor brother, Billy Garven Jnr. was home on leave at the time. My brother stayed with me in the house as the bombing started. The bombs came down very heavily and my brother pushed me under the table. The vibrations of the bombing caused the milk jug to fall from the table. Shortly after this my brother said 'I've been shot'. The house was in complete darkness of course, and it was only when we managed to crawl to the air raid shelter that reality really hit us. My brother could then see what had really happened to him. The milk jug had smashed on to him and the sticky milk had felt like blood! What a relief it was to us all to find that the cause for his concern was merely warm sticky milk!
