Because my father (Jim Watson) was wounded in the First World War he was not fit for active service. As he was a painter and decorator by trade, he was recruited to do work which still took him away from home. He travelled to various parts of the country, camouflaging different aerodromes and other vulnerable sites.
I remember getting postcards from him, though he could never tell us exactly where he was for security reasons.
We lived in the country so we weren't too aware of the bombs and planes etc, but I do remember looking towards Falmouth and seeing the barrage balloons above the Port and also flames if there had been an attack in that area.
