My mother has always retold of how her father had the idea of making a safe place under the floor of their sitting room floor. My grandfather cut a trap door section from the floor and dug out part of the room foundation of the home to make a room where the family could go in time of invasion. The room was lined with brown paper and had a bed. As children my mother would play in the room and would recall the damp smell.
She has always said that if the house was destroyed then it would have been imposible to actually get out of the room. So after the work of my grandfather the family huddled under the kitchen table instead.
