I was born 19th July 1913 I was christened John Thomas Arkinstall and thereafter known as Jack.
In October 1933 I enlisted in the Royal Air Force, the only jobs available at the time were hospital orderlies. I didn鈥檛 care it was better than being out of work and although I had qualified as a car mechanic at Frazer Nash cars there was no work around at that time.
After training I was warned to be prepared for service overseas. Before I left I married my sweetheart Helen. My overseas posting was to Mesopotamia now known as Iraq. However while I was working in the hospital there I met an airmen who, when he realised I had technical training and he advised me to take a trade test. I passed and was sent home to No 3 School of technical training, Manston, Kent to be trained as an aircraft engineer. I passed out as a leading aircraftsmen fitter aero engine. Not long after I was promoted to Corporal.
