My father, Bernard Downes, served as a radio operator in Lancaster Bombers during the second world war, and also had a spell at Bletchley Park, I understand. I served in the RAF from 1971 to 1999, leaving as a Flight Sergeant. I was a Court Shorthand Writer, travelling the world taking verbatim notes and producing transcripts of Courts Martial.
