I was born in 1929 in London and was evacuated with my brother, then aged 4, to a village in Suffolk. My brother developed a bad stutter and it was agreed that we return home Christmas 1939. We were evacuated again at the end of 1940 to Hertfordshire as our house was bomb-damaged and my mother was a nervous wreck.
I joined my grammar school, this time in Sussex.
My father was called up into the Navy in 1942 and we returned to London in 1943 just in time for the doodle-bugs. Our house had undergone some repairs but the flying bombs soon put an end to that and, once again, we were living in the kitchen and scullery and sleeping in the Anderson shelter.
I began work in 1946 and for the next ten years I changed jobs to get promotion and responsibility,
and more money. I married in 1954 and went to live in Enfield. My daughter was born in 1956 and my son was born in 1960. I joined the Civil Defence Corps in 1954 and served with them until they were disbanded. When we moved to Basingstoke I became a school secretary and a Guider - I had been a Brownie and a Guide.
I decided to become a teacher and went as a mature student to a college in Winchester in 1968.
I began teaching in 1970 my subjects were English and History, and I divorced the same year.
I gained promotion in 1973 by moving to Suffolk, taking my children with me. I became a Brown Owl. I studied with the Open University and obtained my B.A degree in 1979. I taught at a high school there until I had to retire in 1989
as I had developed osteo-arthritis in both my hands.
In 1989 was invited to join with three retired colleagues to set up a branch of the University of the Third Age and I have been teaching a Literature Class for fourteen years, and five years ago I began a Scrabble Group. Since we began we have expanded to have 30+ groups and nearly 500 members.
I have three grandchildren, the eldest of whom is 15 and wants to be a writer. I enjoy cooking, wine-making, gardening, learning, travelling abroad and genealogy - hence my interest in WW2 in relation to my family history. This January I joined a Health Club as a Christmas present to me.
If you want to ask me about anything I have written please do so.
