Sheerness Community Learning Centre was established in 1999 by social housing landlord, Amicus, to help members of the local community gain IT skills and qualifications. Since that time, over 630 people have become members of the centre. Currently management services for the centre are provided by the Island Partnership, the local training organisation.
The learning centre charges just 拢4 for annual membership and 30p per hour to use a computer. For that members, who are of all ages, can work through training manuals, use the internet, e-mail, access online training or work on their own projects. The centre also runs its own courses, from time to time, for which it makes a relatively modest charge. Staff and volunteers are available to give support to those using the centre's facilities.
These activities and training take place in a relaxed and informal environment, with an absence of pressure, enabling people to progress at a rate that is set by themselves.
The learning centre has a management committee that meets monthly, in an advisory capacity, to make a contribution to activities. It is hoped that the centre can, in the future, become independent and self-sufficient, at which time, the management committee will take full responsibility for day-to-day activities.
The learning centre has been actively supporting the 大象传媒 WWII memories initiative - our staff of volunteers have helped numerous people to preserve their wartime memories for posterity.
