I am writing this on behalf of my Father, he had begun to write down some of his memories, getting one or two published in various magazines etc but he never managed to write the book that it apparently in everyone.
My Father joined the Merchant navy in 1936 and was in Glasgow when war broke out. Coming out the other side, he did a variety of jobs, most notably that of a publican. In later years he became active with the Royal Naval Association, a very keen reader and also a collector of all things nautical.
He also contacted Kurt Baberg who was responsible for sinking one of his ships, they became good friends, writing regularly and he attended several of the U-Boat reunions for the crew of Kurt's boat. He was never bitter about anything that had happened and he luckily came through it relatively unscathed.
I wanted to add his story to the website mainly so that it would not be forgotten when I shuffle off this mortal coil, but also because I think its a great story.
