I remember Royal Air Force Spilsby which I visited a lot when I was a boy. I think the Canadian Air Force was their in the war. It allways impressed me with the size of the aerodrome and the size of the hangers. The runway was amazing and long. A lot of the aerodrome was as it was in the war and they tried to improve the runway. I remember the old farmers saying that it would never work, because of the flooding in that area. As the big bombers tried to land water spouted out of the holes at the side. It did bring in local employment though. I have been back since and they have changed the main runway and some of the buildings have gone. Great Steeping was not far from were I lived and I did enjoy cycling over to see the big aerodrome, and also we had friend we used to visit on the edge of Firsby which was close to the East end of the airfield. So my parents visited the area with me too. They were my formative years which led later in life to join the Royal Air Force for 12 years, and get my licence, and I am still flying locally in small aircraft including microlight. Fond memories, low flying Meteors, Vampires over our farm, and the collecting point at the end of runway for the airfields of East Kirkby with the American bombers high overhead on our farm. They must have been about 4000 feet , probably it was can anybody tell me what the hight was? It looked high, because they were big bombers.
I would like any feedback of anyone whe can also remember that area around Great Steeping?
