Based in Hackney, East London, the Building Exploratory provides an exhibition which explores all aspects of Hackney鈥檚 environment and has been designed to help communities understand and appreciate their local area. Each year we provide free workshops for thousands of school children, families and a wide range of adult groups.
Memory Blitz
The Memory Blitz project celebrated the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War by recording the wartime memories of Hackney residents. Those memories reflect a broad range of older residents鈥 experiences of the war, and in particular, those relating to the physical impact it had on local neighbourhoods. The Building Exploratory also worked with children from a primary school, arranging for them to visit a group of the older participants to speak to them about their memories.
To ensure that the memories recorded for Memory Blitz are accessible to a wide audience the Building Exploratory has added the participants' stories to the People's War website. We have also used extracts from the recordings to develop web pages about the Second World War in Hackney. These can be accessed through our 鈥淏rickfields鈥 website - http://www.brickfields.org.uk/
