Dick Burton was my father who died 1994. I have been trying to trace his army history since then. This is not easy as he didn't talk about it. I would be very interested to hear from ANYONE who knows ANYTHING about personnel who went to a mountaineering school in Montrose Scotland. Or about army personnel who were based in Salen or Fort William West Scotland. I know my mother and father travelled by the flying scotsman up to Scotland and stayed with a post mistress in Salen and they were billoted at a farm in Fort William who's small daughter called Susan I am called after. She must be in her 60/70s now.My father went to france twice, he was a Sapper and he was in Hamburg and the Maginot LIne. He must have stayed with a family while in Europe as I have 'photos of him with them.I believe there were units from Scotish regiments at the Maginot line. My father came from Wakefield,West Yorkshire so why would he be sent to Scotland!
