In September 1939 I was 10years of age, and inthat September I started at the local Boys High School (Grammar) in Form 1.
as everyone knows not a lot happened - it was the'phoney war'.
we lived above and behind a branch shop of the Family Greengrocers and Fruiterers, which as it had a telephone, with an extension in the private area a Wardens Post was established in a large room under the Stairs, my Father being one of the Wardens. So 1939 was almost as normal. We took our Gasmasks everywhere.
However My school, And other local schools had schools from the London area evacuated to Worthing, and who we had to share the schools with. My school had the Boys from Battersea Grammar using the building, and the Girls High school (I believe) had the equivalent Girls from Battersea. We had the school until lunch time, and the Evacuees were educated in the Afternoons.
As far as I know it worker very well
