The period before the war imposed an anxiety which was particularly acute for all between late teens and early twenties. We knew that we would be involved and all were worried and unsettled.Career plans were affected. Some rushed into marriage trying to get some sort of future planned.The business of medical checks and getting into the service of your choice were times of concern. All too soon the dreaded call-up papers arrived.I was relieved to get into the RAF and the big adventure started when I was directed to Padgate for initial induction and training.It was six years before the process was put into reverse.
