Hi,
It's taken the best part of 16 years to get 'A View From the Office' into print.
It started with Norman Franks interviewing Ron for one of his books. I then nagged him into putting pen to paper just to get the story for the family.
Joy, Ron's wife (I'm their son!)told me she had never heard of a lot of the stories until she had read an early draft! They really didn't want to talk about it after the war!
Having 'finished' the book we took it round most of the main stream publishers who weren't interested unless it involved a famous name. We thus resorted to self publishing it and getting it printed by Anthony Rowe who did a great job.
So it can be done with no more than a home PC, scanner and an average knowledge of Word!! The best piece of advise was 'Take a look at the books on your shelf and see how they're laid out!!' ISBN's are available from the ISBN agency via Whitaker. Barcodes were sorted out by the printer.
The hardest part is in the proof reading and editing..........time and time and time again! Then of course it's down to you to sell it!!
Most people can't get their minds round publishing a book themselves, but we've done it and so have many other people.
If you want any further advise leave a message and I'll try and help out.
