I am writing a novel. My main character is a Canadian Cree Indian who joins a Scottish battalion just prior to the outbreak of war. It is an adventure story, but I want to spice it with details of everyday life. I am particularly interested in details relating to those whose home-lives were disrupted by the armies who paraded back and forth over that terrain.
I am also interested in what soldiers ate, what they did when they had a toothe ache, what sorts of ingenuity helped make life bearable. Since my main character becomes a dentist after the war I am particularly interested in anecdotes related to dental services.
