My grandfather, Herbert Stokes, was involved in Britain's greatest ever maritime disaster, the sinking of the Lancastria, where more lives were lost than in the Titanic and Lusitania combined. Even so, most people have never heard of this terrible episode as the survivors were forbidden to talk about it at the time and Churchill hushed it up for the sake of morale.
