Like many people of my age (40+)I am interested to find out as much as I can about my family's history within the forces.
My late grandfather and uncle were both in the Green Howards and never spoke of it.
My late father was in the Coldstream Guards and seldom mentioned his experiences with anything more than a passing reference. To my recollection his only detailed reference came whilst he was taking me,aged about six, to have my hair cut, whereupon he swore that the barber we were going to was the same one who used to cut his hair whilst sitting on the banks of the Irrawaddy River in Burma.
I don't know to this day if the story is true, but I can vouch for the fact that no matter what style of haircut you asked for,you always got a short back and sides.
Quite by chance ,at an aunts funeral, I was told another aunt had a photograph of my father in uniform and upon seeing it,realised it also gave his service number.I have from this managed to obtain a copy of my fathers service record from the Coldstream Guards Regimental Archivist in London. That then is my reason for starting out on this enquiry.
