LAST AMBULANCE FROM DUNKIRK.A VETERANS STORY
I am a Dunkirk Veteran ,aged 95 years and still going strong I actually was at Dunkirk and attached to the 159,Welsh Field Ambulance Unit.I have a lot of memories of course. I especially remember that I was driving one of the last three Ambulances left ferrying wounded to the embarkation point as the retreat
neared its end.Eventually mine was the only ambulance left, and I was ordered to return to fetch the last wounded off the Field Dressing Station, even though the Germans were only two miles away,a bit too close for comfort.I then returned to pick up the officer surgeon , and about six wounded who were helped into the ambulance .We then drove back about a mile, and became acutely aware of shells dropping all around..As we arrived at the jetty, I vividly remember the vehicle in front being hit by a shell and destroyed. I,m not ashamed to admit that after seeing my colleagues blown up at close quarters, I kept my self going by repeating The Lord's Prayer over and over again to myself. We were then picked up by the Royal Navy, a destroyer if my memory serves me right. We then left speedily for England, having taken off the wounded and disabled the ambulance with a couple of rounds through the engine..
The Officer was awarded the Military Cross, and my name was mentioned in dispatches
Tom..
