I have recently been sorting through my father's wartime papers to put his story on my About links.
Stew Campbell joined the Fleet Air Arm at eighteen; had a short, intense period of combat with 830 Squadron in Malta; spent two years as a prisoner-of-war; and made a high-adrenaline escape back to the UK. He had some steam to let off after this, and my mother's parents still thought him 'a bit wild' five years later! He became a Tea Planter after the war and much enjoyed it, returning to England in 1974 to finish his career with British Caledonian and British Airways.
At eighteen I had a battle of a different kind, as a gay man in a homophobic society. I let a prison grow around me for years, and escaped at last.
