Although I have been reunited with school friends from the first time I was evacuated to Lapford in North Devon, I have not been so lucky regarding my one year staying in the village of Marlpool, near Heanor, Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire.
I have this year contacted the daughter of my foster parents, which was sheer magic. For reference to others this was done by e mailing the council who passed my info onto the local history group in the library.
I went from Whatley Avenue school, Raynes Park, SW20 in 1944 some time, having returned from three and a half years in Devon.
My middle sister had been my companion in Devon and my older, married sister was with me for a month in the same digs in Marlpool. So very sad to say that both my sisters have passed away, my middle sister Betty only last year and I miss her dreadfully.
My husband Ed and I have just had our 5th evacuees reunion here in Epsom. An informal group but with the guidance of the staff and James Roffey at The Evacuees Reunion Association, of which we are both members. We have also given talks to the children in our grandchildren's schools, all of which have been received with extreme interest, especially when we have taken samples of the contents of what our weekly
rations looked like.
I look forward to hearing from ex Marlpool Evacuees from Raynes Park.
