I grew up in the small village of Water Orton 10 miles outside of Birmingham. The original name of the village Water Orton was Overton, the meaning of which is thought to be "Settlement on the Tun", which indicated a small collection of dwellings on the high riverbank. I have many happy memories of my 24 years living in the village of Water Orton. I played cricket and football for Water Orton in the 1950鈥檚. In fact I captained Water Orton FC in the first match after the amalgamation of Water Orton FC and Water Orton Youth Club FC in 1954. I emigrated to Canada with my wife and four children in 1975. Some of the names of school friends from the village I recall are Walter Shaw, Michael James, Michael Evans, Bob Carter, Doug Cross, John Willets, Gordon Beckerleg, Roy Stillgoe, Frank Engeldow, Tony English and many more.
The wartime was a special time of my life, particularly because of the wonderful spirit and camaraderie and friendship, which pervaded every aspect of village life.
