I am currently researching and compiling the history of Kendal's Telephone network before automation in 1973.
Scanning the local newspapers for the war years has revealed very little, which for security reasons I had expected. However, in conversation with one Telephonist who worked at the Stricklandgate Exchange, I learned that during one of the air raids on Barrow the local telephone exchange was hit. Although not put out of commission, and traffic continued to be managed, the staff were affected in that many had lost homes. The Telephonists in Kendal arranged for a bus to take the off-duty staff over to Barrow to give relief to their colleagues so that they could make arrangements for accommodation etc resulting from the bombing.
We haven't been able to put a precise date on this incident. Some think it was on a Sunday, and we are not sure if it was 1941 or 1942.
If anyone can help fill in the detail we would be most appreciative.
